American Blackbelly Sheep

About Us

Self Sustainability

Here at Devine Pickins' we are trying our best to live a more sustainable life. We raise registered American Blackbelly sheep for breeding stock as well as food. Our farm is located in Teresita, Oklahoma that is nestled in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains. We grow a small garden every year for our own personal use and of course feed any extras to our animals. Our breeding goals are assessed yearly for constant improvement because there is no such thing as perfection.

Raising Our Sheep

 Parasite Resistant

We are actively breeding only stock that shows a resistance to parasites.

Friendly & Calm Temperament

ABB's are often known for their "wild" characteristics which some people love but we prefer a sheep with brains enough to understand that we are their keepers and therefore we are not to be feared. Our sheep will come running to greet us at the fence, normally because they think we will have a treat for them but even when we don't they hang around to get a good neck & back scratching. This is the type of temperaments we are aiming for. Our rams are always calm and respectful of humans, we will not tolerate a mean ram in our breeding program. Life is too short to deal with mean rams or roosters for that matter.

Low Maintenance

ABB's are naturally low maintenance. They shed there own wool every year, so no shearing. They do very well as a grass fed animal, so no big feed bill. They are known for their ability to give birth easily, so no sleeping in the pasture.  And WOW!! They are excellent mothers, so no waking up every 2 hrs to bottle feed.

All in all we are able to just let the animal do as God intended.

Is the Meat Good?

Yes, the meat is lean, tender, mild tasting and delicious. Most people that do not like lamb will love ABB meat because of it's exceptionally mild flavor. Additionally ABB's are capable of maintaining this mild tender flavor into their second year of age without getting that mutton flavor.
